A simple timeline for organizing a move in Northern Virginia, Washington, DC, or Maryland.
Four weeks before moving
- Choose a target date and request moving estimates.
- Decide what to move, donate, sell or remove.
- Create a room-by-room inventory.
- Ask both properties about loading, parking and elevator rules.
Two weeks before moving
- Confirm the move date, arrival window and job scope.
- Reserve elevators or loading docks.
- Start packing nonessential rooms and label every box.
- Arrange utility, internet and address changes.
- Share photos of oversized, fragile or unusually heavy items.
The week of your move
- Finish packing and separate items you will carry personally.
- Confirm parking at pickup and destination.
- Disassemble only the items included in your plan.
- Empty and secure appliances when applicable.
- Keep medications, keys, chargers and documents together.
Moving day
- Keep children and pets away from loading paths.
- Walk through the inventory and special instructions with the crew.
- Check closets, cabinets, storage spaces and outdoor areas before leaving.
- Complete a final walkthrough at the destination.
